Cy Twombly
Catalogue Raisonné des Oeuvres sur Papier
Volume VII, 1977–82
Yvon Lambert Catalogue Raisonné des Oeuvres sur Papier 1977–82 is the second of two volumes Lambert produced on Twombly’s works on paper produced by Lambert. Both volumes have been revised and updated in the Del Roscio catalogues raisonnés of drawings. Vol. VI corresponds to Del Roscio Vol. VI and VII. As the Lambert volumes are both difficult to access and now superseded, the Del Roscio editions should be consulted wherever possible.
Philippe Soller’s introductory essay, “Twombly’s Epiphanies,” situates the artist’s practice as a series of revelations and heroic exploits. (This text is also available online here.) It includes reflections on working methods and identifications of major influences: James Joyce, Greco-Roman antiquity, Nicholas Poussin, and similar figures. Soller’s open-ended meditations tend more towards poetry and affective evocations than analysis. Artworks discussed include Muses (1979), Tulips from Paterno (1980), and Silex Scintillans (1981).
