This short catalogue was published by the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam in 1966. It includes a brief essay by Paul Wember in Dutch, a biography of the artist focusing on exhibitions of his paintings until 1966, a list of works exhibited, and black and white reproductions of artworks.
Wember’s essay touches on the relationship between Twombly’s “child-like” painting and children’s art. He also draws connections to other artists such as Paul Klee with similarly “child-like” styles, which he contrasts with historic movements in western art history. He also discusses Primitivism and the relationship between writing and drawing in Twombly’s practice.
For more on Twombly’s early practice, see also major retrospective catalogues and monographs, such as: Richard Leeman’s Cy Twombly: A Monograph (2005); Mary Jacobus’s Reading Cy Twombly: Poetry in Paint (2016); Thierry Greub’s Inscriptions (2022); Cy Twombly: A Retrospective, ed. Kirk Varnedoe (1994); and Cy Twombly: Making Past Present, eds. Christine Kondoleon and Kate Nesin (2020).
