This volume was published on the occasion of the Italian retrospective Cy Twombly, held at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome in 2009. The exhibition catalogue is the Italian edition of the publication Cy Twombly. Cycles and Seasons, edited by Nicholas Serota and published by Tate Publishing in 2008.

The Italian edition of the catalogue features forewords from Nicholas Serota and Maria Vittoria Marini Clarelli. It also includes essays by Richard Shiff “Amuleto” and Tacita Dean “Un panegirico”, as well as Cy Twombly’s interview with Nicholas Serota "La storia dietro il pensiero. Intervista a Cy Twombly”, and thirteen catalogue entries by Nicholas Cullinan in which he describes some of the major works or cycles exhibited at the retrospective, among others Ferragosto (1961), Treatise on the Veil (1968/1970) and the Green Paintings (1988). The catalogue is completed with the chronology by Nicholas Serota, the bibliography by Krzysztof Cieszkowski and Assunta Ferrera, and a list of exhibited works.

The Italian exhibition, Cy Twombly, features seven bronze sculptures that were not exhibited during the first station of the show at the Tate Modern: Untitled (2000-2009); Untitled (The Mathematical Dream of Ashurbanipal) (2000-2009); Untitled (2002-2009); Untitled (2004-2009); Untitled (2009); Untitled (2009); Untitled (2009).
