Cy Twombly. Souvenirs of D’Arros and Gaeta

Edited by Thomas Ammann

Cy Twombly: Souvenirs of D’Arros and Gaeta was published in 1992 by Thomas Ammann Fine Art, Zurich. It was published in an edition of 1000 numbered copies, with copies 1–100 numbered and signed by Twombly. It includes photographs by Tatiana Franchetti Twombly. The artworks reproduced were completed by Twombly on D’Arros, Seychelles and in Gaeta, Italy in 1990 and are all acrylic, crayon, and pencil on paper. The catalogue comprises detailed, large-format reproductions of these artworks, many of which include irises or other floral themes. There is no exhibition checklist or other information included about the artworks, and the catalogue contains no discursive text.

Reproductions of these artworks can be more readily accessed in the relevant volume of the catalogue raisonné of drawings, volume VIII, which includes works produced between 1990 and 2011. Further discussion of this period in Twombly’s practice and his use of floral motifs more broadly can be found in volumes such as Gagosian Gallery’s Cy Twombly: In Beauty it is finished: Drawings 1951–2008 (2018); Mary Jacobus’s Reading Cy Twombly: Poetry in Paint (2016); and Dominique Baqué’s Cy Twombly: Sous le signe d’Apollon et de Dionysos (2016).
