The Drawing Center
Receives Transformative Gift
to Offer Free Admission

The Drawing Center in New York will offer free admission for the next three years thanks to a grant from the Cy Twombly Foundation.

From the press release

The Drawing Center is pleased to announce that it has received a multi-year grant from the Cy Twombly Foundation to support free admission through February 2023. Free admission to The Drawing Center will begin on February 20, 2020, in conjunction with the opening of the exhibitions Guo Fengyi: To See from a Distance and Curtis Talwst Santiago: Can’t I Alter.

The generous grant from the Cy Twombly Foundation builds upon a recent initiative to offer free admission to all visitors to The Drawing Center. When the program was tested for the exhibition The Pencil Is a Key: Drawings by Incarcerated Artists, The Drawing Center saw a 50% increase in visitorship and welcomed a significant number of first-time visitors.

“This gift of free admission by the Cy Twombly Foundation is transformative. It will expand our audience and encourage visitors of all backgrounds to experience The Drawing Center’s dynamic programming on multiple occasions,” said Laura Hoptman, Executive Director, The Drawing Center. “The connection of The Drawing Center to Twombly—one of the twentieth century’s greatest draftsmen, who did more to put drawing at the center of the discourse than any other artist of his generation—is inspiring. We are deeply grateful to the Cy Twombly Foundation for their generosity and for recognizing the significance of free admission to the future of our organization.”

Nicola Del Roscio, the President of the Cy Twombly Foundation said of the gift: “Cy had a direct connection from the mind and idea to the hand, which was expressed through his line and drawing. I think he would have been very happy with this donation to The Drawing Center.”
